CISSPs have multiple qualities that distinguish them from other security professionals. These qualities are acquired through experience and supplementary PMI certification training. PMI stands for Project Management Institute and is an organization responsible for administering several certificates. While PMI certification training does not necessarily prepare one to become a Certified Information System Security Professional, many believe that PMI certification training can complement a CISSP certificate. The skill set that one acquires through the training includes the ability to take on a number of projects dealing with access control, security architecture, compliance, information security governance and cryptography. Currently, it is estimated that there are over 70,000 CISSPs across the globe.

As a Certified Information Systems Security Professional, one grows accustomed to a set of standards known as the Common Body of Knowledge or CBK. This standard encompasses a number of principles that emphasize confidentiality, integrity and availability. The goal of the CISSP program is to get every professional on the same page with regards to the practices and procedures that information system security professionals promote. As stated earlier, PMI certification training can complement a CISSP certificate. The PMI certification training will help one become familiar with the obligations and responsibilities of managing complex projects. Being well-rounded can help increase one's marketability and a dual-certificate consisting of a PMI certificate and CISSP certificate can help one become more efficient in a profession. Today, the CISSP exam consists of 250 multiple choice questions, 225 of which are graded. Applicants must receive a raw score of 700 to become certified. CISSPs will then have to renew their certification every year and pay a membership fee. As can be seen, once one becomes a CISSP there are additional considerations that can impact one's eligibility.

There is some current debate regarding the credibility of a CISSP. Given that the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium is independent of the government, some do not recognize a CISSP degree as a touted credential. This understanding could not be further from the truth, as CISSPs are becoming hot commodities in today's market. Those looking to take the exam should complete a number of CISSP practice exams beforehand to become familiar with the wide range of topics. Too often do candidates go into the exam not knowing what to expect, which unfortunately causes them to fail. Given the costs and time associated with CISSP exam preparation, it only makes sense that one put forth sufficient time and effort to ensure that one becomes certified after the first exam attempt.
